If you need a flash-based player it deserves a look, but I would suggest that you check out other options, especially those from Creative, before making an investment. The one exception would be anyone crazy about the design. I don't like it, but the distinct styling might attract a few of you flies. The aesthetic is an odd combination of busy and stripped down. It looks like it has many controls, but it doesn't.
And it looks nothing like the rest of Creative's family, all of which have streamlined, modern good looks. The body is made of plastic that resembles brushed aluminum; the buttons and accents are made of plastic that resembles chrome. The controls are fairly basic.
Over on the left is the mic. The hold slider and mode button sit on the bottom of the player. The mode button toggles among MP3, radio, and voice recordings. On the top are a volume seesaw, a record button, and a multifunction jog lever. Unfortunately you cannot hear anything while scanning. You can depress it to access the menu system. The cool looking blue backlit LCD is divided into two sections. The larger left panel shows track info; the square to the right shows basic player information.
It is, of course, one LCD with an overlay in the cover. You cannot change the size of the enormous text. On the right you get battery level, repeat mode, file format, and levels. I really wish you could make the font smaller. The Atari-style blocks give it an antique look. Considering the size of the Rhomba I was expecting a more robust menu. We find the noise irritating, but someone somewhere might someday find a use for it.
Luckily, turning off the option is easy enough. The Rhomba earns high audio-quality scores. Boasting a commendable signal-to-noise ratio of 88dB, the player serves up rich, detailed sound with plenty of bass.
Included earbuds are the weak link of other compact models, but music came through great over the Rhomba's, and it improved, of course, when we switched to our reference pair, the Shure E3c. The Rhomba cranks out an adequate volume level of 10mW per channel. The player performed well, picking up all of the city's stations and some from neighboring towns.
Broadcasts stayed clear as we traveled, suffering no interference around tall buildings. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery lasted a respectable 12 hours in our tests, beating Creative's own hour estimate. File Transfer Speed Longer bars indicate better performance. Battery Drain Tests Longer bars indicate better performance.
Jens of Sweden MB Creative Rhomba MB The Good Slick, eye-catching design; vibrant sound; small and lightweight; voice and FM-radio recording. No high-quality recording; face is susceptible to smudges. If you're looking for a great-sounding and pocketable MP3 player, the Rhomba fits the bill.
